MATERIALBYPRODUCT AND THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA

The State of Design Festivals cultural program aims to take design to everyone and in 2010 promote “change by design’.

MATERIALBYPRODUCT have been manipulating the space between garment, interior and architecture through the exploration of everyday objects, since this fashion design partnership was founded in 2004.

Curtains, screens and chandeliers have formed part of MATERIALBYPRODUCTs portable fashion house. These objects have attempted to extend MATERIALBYPRODUCT’s design ideas beyond garments destined to a clothing rack or body.

Through the exploration of the portable fashion house MATERIALBYPRODUCT are harnessing ambiguous moments in the design process.

MATERIALBYPRODUCT have always prototyped these concepts within their own fashion house and in the public domain. Propositioning and exploring design ideas that challenge the notion of fashion, art, architecture and interiors as we know them has resulted in luxury gowns, private commissions and cultural engagement.

MATERIALBYPRODUCT “change by design” and will be conducting a performance at the National Gallery of Victoria as part of the 2010 State of Design Festival.

Performance: Lace by Design
Sat 24 Jul, 3-3.30pm
Please join us for scene 2 a Performance of 'Lace'. Over the past six seasons MATERIALBYPRODUCT have been creating curtain gowns and have been playing with the notion of a portable "fashion house".
The next stage of MATERIALBYPRODUCT’s portable “fashion house” introduced illumination, referencing the candlelit atmosphere of an 18th century ballroom and electric lit 1920's dance hall through the guise of a chandelier. This is in conjunction with the closing of the State of Design Festival.

PRESTON ZLY AND THE RED SHOES

The State of Design’s 2010 Public program is being used as a platform to promote Melbourne based shoe makers Preston Zly.

Shoe makers Preston Zly invite you to the screening of the The Red Shoes (1948), a film that has provided endless inspiration to the studio.

Directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger turn Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale into a movie about a ballerina who has to choose between the man she loves and dancing for her pedantic impresario. Often considered one of the top ten British movies of all time, The Red Shoes is a film about the impossibility of changing human nature.

Meet in the Preston Zly car park for a screening in your favourite red shoes. All red shoes worn to this event will then form part of a photographic installation.

Shoes makers Johanna Preston and Petr Zly of Preston Zly create contemporary shoes using old world craftsmanship and traditional techniques that are inherently environmentally sustainable. Preston Zly shoes represent the meeting of the handmade with design and new technologies.

Preston Zly are pleased to be partnering with Leona Edminston “Pins” who will be providing luxurious opaque tights to all that attend and Lindt chocolates.
